  1. FREEMASONRY : Some Basics & a Partial Bibliography
  2. --------------------------------------------------
  3.    The earliest known use of the word "freemason" is
  4. encountered in the London Assize of Wages, 1212 CE.
  5. The first reference to a Mason's Lodge is found in
  6. 1277, and to "Freemasonry," in an English building
  7. contract of 1436.
  8.    The oldest Masonic Document is the Regius MS.,
  9. circa 1390. the first use of the word "Freemason" in
  10. print was in 1563, in a book entitled 'Dives Pragmaticus.'
  11. The first extended printed account of Freemasonry
  12. appears in Plot's 'Natural History Of Staffordshire',
  13. Oxford, 1686, pp. 316-18. The first Masonic book is 
  14. known as the "Roberts Constitutions," printed and sold
  15. by J. Roberts in London, 1722. The first Official
  16. Masonic book is Anderson's 'The Constitutions of the
  17. Free-Masons', London, 1723, of which Benjamin Franklin
  18. (a Mason) published a reprint in Philadelphia in 1734,
  19. it being the first American Masonic Book.
  20.    The first duly constituted Lodge in America was The
  21. First Lodge of Boston (still in existance as St. John's
  22. Lodge), constituted July 30, 1733 by Henry Price of
  23. Boston. The first native-born American to be made a
  24. Mason was Jonathan Belcher, born in Boston in 1681, and
  25. made a Mason in Europe in 1704. He was governor of both
  26. Massachusetts and New Hampshire from 1730 to 1741.
  27.    Just slighly shy of one half of the 56 signers of the
  28. Declaration of Independence were Masons; 31 of the 55
  29. Delegates to the Constitutional Convention were Masons;
  30. so were many of Washington's Generals.
  31.    Promiment famous masons of History include: Paul Revere,
  32. John hancock, Joseph Warren, George Washington, James
  33. Monroe, Andrew Jackson, James K. polk, James Buchanan,
  34. Andrew Johnson, James A. Garfield, William McKinley,
  35. Theodore Roosevelt, WIlliam Howard Taft, Warren G. Harding,
  36. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Lyndon Baines
  37. Johnson and Gerald R. Ford.

  61. Many of the following books are not as easy to find as
  62. those I mentioned in my last post on the subject, either
  63. they are extremely rare in the public sector or in many
  64. cases long out of print except internally to the 
  65. organization itself. This list is in no way a complete
  66. listing of books on the subject - The internally used
  67. library (such as that in The Grand Lodge of Massachusetts)
  68. is huge in comparison and includes books, news clippings
  69. and internal records not accessable to the public by any
  70. known means. These books here actually represent what
  71. American Freemasons use as a preliminary reading list for
  72. candidates for the degrees within Masonry.
